CARISMA LOW GI RICE
Kalanamak rice, also known as Buddha Rice or the “Black Pearl of Indian Rice,” is an ancient, aromatic heritage rice variety with a distinctive black husk and a white kernel.
HISTORY & LEGEND
Cultivated since the time of Gautama Buddha, grains have been recovered from archaeological excavations in Kapilvastu and Aligarhwa (Siddharthnagar, Uttar Pradesh).
Legend states that after attaining enlightenment, Buddha passed through Mathla village and gave his alms-rice to the villagers, telling them to sow it in marshy soil so the resulting crop would carry a lasting aroma to remember him by.
Traditionally grown in the Terai belt of eastern Uttar Pradesh (including Siddharthnagar, Gorakhpur, Kushinagar, and Maharajganj) and parts of Nepal. It is recognized under Uttar Pradesh’s One District One Product (ODOP) scheme and holds a Geographical Indication (GI) tag.
